What Is the Golden Rule of Scuba Diving?

The golden rule of scuba diving is simple: never hold your breath.

This is the single most important safety rule you will learn because it protects your lungs from over-expansion injuries. As you ascend, the ambient pressure around you decreases, which causes the air inside your lungs to expand. If you are breathing continuously, that extra air simply escapes through your regulator. However, if you hold your breath while ascending, that expanding air has nowhere to go and can cause severe damage to your lung tissue.

Whether you are at three feet or thirty feet, you must maintain a slow, steady breathing rhythm at all times. This rule is emphasized from day one of your training and becomes second nature to every diver.
