Promising cutting-edge infrared thermal tech and premium stretch neoprene, this suit claims to be the ultimate cold-water defense for divers who tend to chill easily.
I put the BARE Reactive through roughly 20 hours of hands-on field testing, logging extended 3-hour pool training sessions in 82°F water and deep freshwater cenote dives in Mexico, including The Pit down to 90 feet (75°F) and Nicte-Ha (75°F). Thermal Performance & Omnired Tech
BARE heavily markets their Omnired (Celliant) Infrared Technology (a lining embedded with thermo-reactive minerals that convert body heat into infrared energy to reflect it back into your muscle tissue). While tech claims on paper can sometimes feel like marketing buzz, in the water, this suit is undeniably warm.
If you are prone to getting cold, long bottom times or extended pool skills work can quickly drag down your core temp. During 3-hour continuous pool sessions, thermal comfort remained rock-solid. Down at 90 feet in the 75°F freshwater of The Pit, initial entry introduced a brief trickle of cool water, but the suit trapped and warmed it almost immediately. There was zero lingering chill throughout the dive, proving that its thermal engine does exactly what it promises.
Fit, Flex, and Sizing
Sizing is where the BARE Reactive truly outshines much of the competition. If you fall around 5’5″ and 150 lbs (like me), finding a 5mm suit that doesn’t bunch up like an accordion at the wrists and ankles is usually a nightmare, as most brands seem tailored for people 5’8″ and up.
The Medium (M) size in the BARE Reactive was nearly perfect out of the box for me (roughly half an inch to an inch too long at most on the arms and legs), delivering a snug, custom-feeling fit without choking the neck or constricting the chest. There was zero skin chafing anywhere. Despite being a 5mm suit, the full-stretch neoprene yields excellent dexterity, making it easy to grab and pull sections over your limbs without wrestling the material.

Donning, Doffing, and Water Flushing
Thick 5mm neoprene usually means struggling on the dive deck, often requiring plastic bag tricks just to push your feet through the leg cuffs. The zipper integration on the Reactive removes that struggle completely. Getting in and out is remarkably fast, requiring minimal effort compared to standard suits.
In terms of sealing, water entered only during the initial stride jump entry. Once submerged, the wrist and neck seals formed an effective barrier, eliminating active flushing during movement or maneuvering in overhead cenote environments.
Durability & Travel Considerations
Through 20 hours of mixed pool and cenote testing, the construction showed zero signs of early wear. Seams, lining edges, zipper tracks, and high-friction contact points remained completely intact without fraying or peeling.
The main drawback isn’t a design flaw of BARE, but rather an inherent reality of 5mm neoprene: bulk. If you are accustomed to tightly rolling a 3mm suit into your carry-on or stuffing it easily into a compact dry bag, the 5mm Reactive will require a bit more muscle. You will need to fold it flat in your luggage and allocate extra space in your dive transport gear bag.
Final Verdict: Is the BARE Reactive Worth It?
If you’re diving 70°F+ environments (like Mexico’s cenotes or Fiji’s Tiger Shark dives) and you struggle to stay warm or find suits that fit shorter proportions, the BARE Reactive 5mm is worth every penny. It delivers top-tier thermal reflection, effortless zipper design, and an agile fit that lets you focus on the dive rather than fighting your gear.
The only thing I can think of that would have made this suit absolutely perfect would have been the inclusion of pockets. I think pockets are so underrated and would have loved them on this suit. Regardless, this will now be my new wetsuit for all tropical diving and I can confidently say that I am very happy with it.
