Apeks ThermiQ Hood

Apeks ThermiQ Hood
  • Features Graphene Technology lining that efficiently retains and reflects body heat, keeping you warmer for longer in cold water conditions.
  • Constructed with high-stretch neoprene, this 5mm hood offers an exceptional range of motion, ensuring a comfortable and unrestricted fit during any water activity.
  • Assembled using water-based glue, this hood provides a robust and environmentally friendly bond, increasing the lifespan of the product while minimizing environmental impact.

The Apeks ThermiQ Hood is engineered to significantly reduce water intrusion and flushing. Crafted from high-stretch limestone neoprene, it gives you a specialized snug fit that maintains flexibility for effortless head movement. The construction features double-stitched liquid seams that act as a waterproof barrier. This makes sure the hood remains durable and effective across hundreds of dives.

The core of its thermal performance is integrated Graphene technology. This material acts as a superconductor, snatching heat from the warmest areas of your head and redistributing it to cooler spots. This process increases the internal temperature by an average of 2 degrees Celsius, giving you a critical thermal advantage in chilly waters that can safely extend your bottom time.

The hood also features an eco-conscious design by replacing traditional petroleum-based materials with sustainable limestone neoprene. The lamination fabric is repurposed from recycled plastic bottles, and the entire assembly uses water-based glue. This manufacturing process minimizes the use of harmful chemicals and solvents without sacrificing the professional-grade performance required for cold-water environments.

The ThermiQ also features unisex fit that’s designed to fit everyone.

Fourth Element Neoprene Hood

Fourth Element Neoprene Hood
4.4
  • Stretch neoprene adapts naturally to your head shape for a secure, pressure-free feel.
  • Smooth Glideskin lining allows quick donning and removal, even between repetitive dives.
  • Short neck collar fits seamlessly with both dry and wet suits for added convenience and comfort.
  • Discreet micro vent-holes at the top help release trapped air while maintaining a streamlined profile.

The Fourth Element Neoprene Hood is built with a minimalist design that focuses entirely on comfort and utility. It’s crafted from high-quality stretch neoprene to make sure it feels snug without being restrictive. The interior is lined with smooth Glideskin, which makes sliding the hood on and off much easier while helping to form a solid seal against your skin. This simple approach eliminates unnecessary bulk, making it a reliable choice for any gear bag.

One of the cleverest features of this hood is the integration of micro-venting holes. These tiny vents let trapped air escape from the top of the hood without letting an annoying amount of cold water back in. It effectively solves the “conehead” problem where air bubbles get stuck during your descent. This small detail makes sure you maintain a streamlined profile and stay comfortable throughout your entire dive.

Versatility is a major highlight thanks to the short collar design. This specific cut allows the hood to work seamlessly with both wetsuits and drysuits, preventing the bunching that often happens with longer neck skirts. To keep things durable, the seams are both glued and sewn. This construction method gives you a strong, water-resistant bond that can handle the wear and tear of frequent trips to the local quarry or the open ocean.

The hood comes in a classic black color, making it easy to match with the rest of your kit. It is available in multiple sizes to make sure every diver can find that perfect fit.

Waterproof H2

Waterproof H2
5
  • Anatomical 3D Fit: Pre-shaped scuba diving hood contours to the head and neck for a secure, comfortable fit that minimizes water entry and heat loss.
  • 5/7mm Microcell CR Neoprene: Limestone-based neoprene offers superior insulation and flexibility for cold water diving conditions.
  • HAVS Venting System: Innovative one-way valves release trapped air inside the hood, preventing ballooning and maintaining streamlined performance.

The Waterproof H2 Hood is an anatomical 3D-shaped powerhouse designed for the serious diver who demands performance and comfort. It uses a specialized dual-layer protection system in critical heat loss areas to keep your core temperature stable during deep dives. To give you a perfect, bone-dry seal, the hood uses Glideskin seals at the neck and face that grip comfortably without pulling. This 100% Microcell limestone CR neoprene construction gives a premium balance of rugged durability and the high-stretch flexibility you need for unrestricted movement.

One of the coolest features of this hood is the unique HAVS, or Hood Air Venting System. It uses one-way valves that lets trapped air escape the top of your head without letting any chilly water flush back in. This gets ride of that annoying bubble head feeling and keeps you perfectly streamlined. For added safety in low-visibility or overhead environments, the hood also includes a reflective logo that pops when caught by a dive light.

Everything about the H2 is built for high-performance longevity. The internal lining is extended for extra comfort against the skin, and the entire piece is stitched with bonded high-quality nylon thread to prevent fraying. Even the super-stretch nylon outer layer is designed to move with you.

Keeping this hood in like-new condition is incredibly straightforward. A quick freshwater rinse after each dive is all it takes to clear out salt and sediment from the Microcell pores. As long as you store it away from direct heat and UV radiation, the materials will stay supple and effective for years of reliable service.

This is the hood that I personally use. I have an older version that doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of this newer one. It came with my older generation SCUBAPRO Everdry 4 drysuit and I’ve been using it with everything ever since. I’ve even upgraded to a DUI TLS350 drysuit and still continue to use this hood. It’s that amazing.

Editor’s Notes

Cressi Solo Flex

Cressi Solo Flex Hood
5
  • The Solo Flex 7/5 is made entirely of HS200 high-stretch Neoprene for exceptional comfort and fit. Designed to be used also with drysuits.
  • The thickness is 7 mm on the cranium and 5 mm skin-in neoprene for the face and neck. Face area left unbound to allow for custom trimming.

The Cressi Solo Flex is built from high-stretch HS200 neoprene, giving you a specialized dual-thickness design for maximum thermal protection. You get a thick 7mm layer over the cranium where heat loss is highest, while the face and neck utilize a more flexible 5mm neoprene.

The Solo Flex an unbound face area, which is intentionally left unfinished. This lets you custom-trim the opening to fit your specific face shape or mask preference. Don’t forget about the rest of your gear. Start with our guide here:

Why Are These Dive Hoods Good?

Superior Thermal Retention & Seal Quality: A good hood doesn’t just provide a layer of rubber, it stops water from moving. The picks on this list feature advanced “skin-in” or Glideskin seals around the face and neck. This minimizes flushing (the process where warm water trapped against your skin is replaced by a fresh, cold surge) keeping you warmer for significantly longer.

Integrated Air Venting Systems: There is nothing more annoying than air from your regulator getting trapped in your hood, causing it to balloon and pull on your mask. These hoods utilize specialized one-way valves or micro-venting holes that allow air to escape automatically while preventing cold water from entering.

Anatomical 3D Shaping: The old school hoods were just flat pieces of neoprene glued together, which led to awkward bunching and jaw fatigue. The modern hoods featured here use 3D molding to mimic the natural curve of the human head and neck. This results in a snug fit that maintains flexibility for looking around and communicating underwater.

Sustainable & Skin-Safe Materials: Modern diving is moving away from harsh chemicals. These selections prioritize limestone-based neoprene and solvent-free glues. This is not only better for the oceans we explore but also much better for your skin, reducing the risk of rashes or allergic reactions during long days in the water.
